Newcomers Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best way to communicate with my child’s teacher?

A: You may e-mail, telephone the teacher directly, or put a note in your child’s agenda.

To call your teacher, dial the school phone number (469) 752-0500 and dial the teacher’s extension as listed in the directory, or punch in the teacher’s name using the call buttons. If the teacher is in session, you will reach a voice mail system and your call will be returned.

To email your teacher use the teacher's first name and last name separated by a period (.), then followed by @pisd.edu. Example: barbara.richardson@pisd.edu.

Q: How much money should I put in my child’s lunch account?

A: Anywhere from $10 - $100 is a good suggested amount. Once your child’s account begins to run low, you will be notified. Your child will never go hungry, but you will be asked to pay for their lunch the next day.

Q: What can I do if my child leaves his/her lunch at home?

A: You may bring their lunch to the school office. A Volunteer at the Greeter’s desk will deliver it to your child. WE ask that parents do not go directly back to the classroom, as it is disruptive to the children.

Q: Are there any resources available to answer any parenting questions or concerns that I have?

A: You can contact the Practical Parenting Education Warmline at (469) 752-6180 for some guidance. PPE also offers classes that are open to the community and the Brinker PTA will be sponsoring PPE Parent Education talks throughout the school year. Dates are listed in the electronic Bear Facts, and on this website. You may also contact the principal, Barbara Richardson, at (469) 752-0510 with any concerns or questions.

Q: What is the PTA and what does it do?

A: The Brinker PTA acts as a support to the Brinker staff, children, and parents. It raises funds to provide programs for the children that are not afforded under the current school budget, such as VIP Tutoring, Author Visits, Art Night, Fall Family Picnic, Experience the Awareness Day and much, much, more. The PTA also organizes volunteers to work in the classrooms, help the teachers, and plan class parties. The PTA puts together the school directory, the yearbook and helps the school in many other ways. For more information about what the Brinker PTA is and does, please visit our PTA Home page. From there, you will have direct access to our PTA Goals and PTA Programs.

Q: If I join the PTA, do I have to volunteer?

A: No, you DO NOT have to volunteer (but it is fun and a great way to meet other parents!). You may join the PTA merely to support the school and its programs. If you join the PTA, you will receive a Brinker school directory free with your membership. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET A DIRECTORY. Please contact our Membership chairman at membership @ brinkerpta.org.

Q: How do I sign up to volunteer at Brinker?

A: You will need to fill out a criminal background check form and a volunteer interest form. Security checks are mandated by PISD and are to ensure our children’s safety. All PISD volunteers are required to submit a volunteer/criminal background application only available on-line by clicking here. If you do not have a Texas driver's license, see the school secretary. If you have any questions please contact our 2nd VP of Volunteers at volunteers @ brinkerpta.org.

Q: Why does Brinker not provide bus information at registration?

A: This is not made available to the school. You will receive a postcard in the mail a few days prior to the start of school, informing you of your child’s bus number, stop location, and pick-up and drop-off times. Call (469) 752-0780 with questions.

Q: Does Brinker serve breakfast?

A: No.

Q: How do I order school supplies?

A: you may order school supplies at Back to Brinker Day in August. These supplies will be delivered to your child’s classroom for you. You may also obtain a list of required school supplies by clicking here and purchase them yourself from the store of your choice.

In the fall, the PTA hosts a Newcomer Coffee at a local restaurant or coffee shop. This is open to all incoming Kindergarten families as well as all new families in any grade level. It is an easy and comfortable way to meet new people, ask questions, sign up to volunteer, and as an added bonus, our principal always tries to stop by for a visit.

Additionally, each grade level hosts a welcome coffee at a room mother’s home, usually prior to the fall break. Again, this is a good chance to meet people in your child’s class, sign up to help with classroom activities, and possibly meet some teachers who may stop by.

In the spring, the PTA may host a Newcomer, but it is probably best to contact a PTA member to let us know you are new to Brinker. We will always have coffee and bagels for all of our parents in the foyer or the library on the first day of each semester, so please stop by then as well.

Additionally, the greeters at the greeter desk may prove a helpful resource for you, and of course, volunteering is always a wonderful way to meet new friends and get involved.

Welcome to Brinker Elementary! We hope you will enjoy your experience at Brinker, make lot's of new friends and get involved to help your children learn and grow.
